When you eat food, especially something you really enjoy, do you find… - a world of possibility
When you eat food, especially something you really enjoy, do you find you eat larger amounts more quickly so as to sustain the enjoyable taste in your mouth?

have you ever closed your eyes and chewed incredibly slowly and thoroughly, just tasting every morsel, every millimeter, of whatever it is you are eating, until you swallow.

Wait 3 seconds


and repeat.

A meal is so much more enjoyable this way. Why haven't I ever done this before?

i eat everything slowly, so i can taste it. i find that it's actually a neat way to eat less. you are usually hungry for 20 minutes after you begin eating food, then you are not hungry anymore, regardless of how little you've eaten. if you can slow the intake, and eat less in those 20 minutes, you won't feel an incredible need to eat more.

this works for me for everything but ice cream and lasagne, both of which i will eat until they are gone.

Well.. there's always the most obvious scientific reason...

Let us take for an example, somewhere between twelve and sixteen American ounces of Bourbon Steak. Further expostulate that the aforementionned 'morsels' are bite-sized, so as not to choke the collective 'us'.

Should 'we' take our time, thoroughly delectifying and masticating said 'Bourbon Steak morsels' the end result would be:
Between nine and thirteen American ounces of lukewarm, and rapidly cooling 'Bourbon Steak morsels'.
These further extrapolated and extraneous 'morsels' are thereby greatly detracted from, as the optimal temperature for consumption of commonly prepared and available meat is between the ranges commonly described as 'steaming' and 'hot', with the specified exclusions of cocktail shrimp, seafood salads as a general case, and Steak Tartar/Americaine, which is not cooked at all.

This all having been said, I can think of only a few things which are not so temperature sensitive and yet purported worthy of such passionate and endulgent delicating.. jello, vanilla or chocolate pudding, acidic fruits, and one other substance, which I have not personally come into direct oral contact with (but I don't see how anyone would chew that, so it isn't exactly a great fit for this discussion)

Ahhh, we seem to forget, the majority of my diet consists of things at room temperature or colder.

According to Oxford English Dictionary, "tersely" means: "In a refined or elegant manner; elegantly, politely"

Good question. Not many people that word these days.

My question(s):
1. What the hell does "obtusified" mean?
2. What's your deal with big words anyway? Does it give you a sense of empowerment or something? To communicate effectively in this world you might want to try (1) not using superfluous words like "tersely," and (2) avoiding the use of made up words whose definition is far from clear. Not only are people likely to wonder what you mean, but in certain cases like this one...when "obtuse"--which I _assume_ is the root word of your recently invented word--can mean:"Not acutely sensitive or perceptive; dull in feeling or intellect, or exhibiting such dullness; stupid, insensible"(Oxford English Dictionary). As you can probably see, one can certainly take your (referring to Pushkin) statement as an insult.

In response to Elysa's actual entry:
Definitely! There are certain foods that I could eat until the cows came home (to put it in 'west virginian-ease'). Although, I can never contain myself for an entire three seconds before taking another bite/eating more. That might be the 'typical american' in me, but <pats belly> ...I really don't think I have to worry about how much I eat *wink*. :)

So it could be meants as to come right to the point that was made in a not very direct way . . .

Or it could me something else entirely.

As my guess, knowing you both (and again I could be completely and utterly wrong), there were the best intentions, possibly even humor at some points, intended.

AND, even if either one was meant in harsh or not so kind terms, it is up to you to decide how to take it.
